1. Talk to people you do know. You have professors, family, and
friends! Talk to them about your career goals, and see if they know anyone you
can talk to. You may be surprised by their connections.
2. Attend events and utilize your resources. There are events and resources designed to help BYU students network. Take advantage of
them.
a. BYU Career Fairs host employers from locations across
the United States, giving students the opportunity to make national career
connections. The upcoming General Career and Internship Fair is on January 25,
and the upcoming STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Fair
is on February 2. For times, locations, and other details, see http://careerfair.byu.edu.
b. LinkedIn is a social network that enables you
to connect with students and professionals, and join networking groups. Look
for BYU Alumni groups to extend your networking exponentially. Get started at www.linkedin.com.
c. Take a Cougar to Lunch is a program sponsored by the BYU
Student Alumni Association that allows you to sign up to meet and visit with an
alumnus during a lunch appointment. Sign up at http://lunch.byu.edu.
d. Marriott School Alumni Database houses contact information for
thousands of alumni. Perform a search and find contact information for people
who match your interests. Go to marriottschool.byu.edu/alumnidirectory/index.cfm to get started.
e. Clubs sometimes host employers on campus.
Get involved with a club that interests you to see what career expansion
opportunities it provides. Visit clubs.byu.edu for a list of clubs you can join.
3. Branch out! Networking is about connections and developing
relationships. Do not expect to network effectively by only talking with people
you know. It takes effort to step out of your comfort zone, but it is essential
in order to meet employers.
